The air we breathe links us to distant forests

The water within us connects to rivers and oceans

PROFESSOR AMIT RAPHAEL ZORAN OF THE HEBREW UNIVERSITY STUDIES CONSCIOUSNESS, PERCEPTION, DESIGN, TECHNOLOGY AND THE LIVING WORLD.

Professor Amit Raphael Zoran is a computer science researcher, educator, and designer whose work explores consciousness, perception, technology, and the living world. A faculty member at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a graduate of the MIT Media Lab, he has spent fifteen years studying hybrid forms of human machine collaboration. His teaching and writing extend this work through contemplative practice, field research in nature, and comparative study of mystical traditions. His work brings scientific research, contemplative traditions, traditional knowledge, and lived experience into dialogue, connecting laboratory and forest, technological systems and human attention, ancient practices and contemporary questions without collapsing their differences. At the heart of his work is a question of orientation: what do we need to keep cultivating in ourselves as technology becomes more capable? Amit approaches this through research, writing, teaching, and field practice, moving between forests, contemplative traditions, and computational systems. Rather than treating technology and nature as opposites, he studies how each can sharpen our understanding of perception, attention, skill, agency, and our place within a changing world. His students come from many backgrounds but share a willingness to examine familiar assumptions and test new ways of seeing. Through courses and practice, they explore attention, perception, technology, and the living world as connected dimensions of experience.
